DIN connector

A DIN connector (Deutsches Institut für Normung) is a type of circular or rectangular electrical connector that follows the standards set by the German Institute for Standards (DIN).

DIN connectors are widely used in a variety of applications, including audio, video, computing, industrial, and automotive equipment.

Here are some general features of DIN connectors :

Shape and size : DIN connectors can come in different shapes and sizes depending on their specific application. DIN circular connectors are often used in audio and video applications, while DIN rectangular connectors are common in industrial and automotive applications.

Number of pins or contacts : DIN connectors can have a variable number of pins or contacts, depending on the needs of the application. Some DIN connectors are designed for simple connection, while others may have multiple pins for more complex functions.

Locking mechanism : Many DIN connectors are equipped with a locking mechanism to ensure a secure connection between devices. This mechanism can be in the form of a bayonet lock, a screw mechanism, or other types of locking systems.

Specific applications : DIN connectors are used in a wide range of applications, including audio equipment (such as microphones and speakers), video equipment (such as monitors and cameras), computer equipment (such as keyboards and mice), industrial equipment (such as sensors and actuators), and automotive equipment (such as car radios and navigation systems).

Circular DIN Audio/Video Connectors

All male connectors (plugs) of this type have a circular outer metal frame with a diameter of 13.2 mm, with a keying that prevents connection in an incorrect orientation.
The connectors in this family differ in the number of pins and layouts. The IEC 60130-9 standard states that male connectors can fit in a 60130-9 IEC-22 or 60130-9 IEC-25 package and female connectors can fit in a 60130-9 IEC-23 or 60130-9 IEC-24 package.

Circular Audio Connectors :
Note : the pinouts are given from the keyer in a clockwise direction (anti-trigonometric direction).

There are seven common layout diagrams, with a number of pins ranging from 3 to 8. Three different 5-pin connectors exist. They are marked by the angle between the first and the last pins : 180°, 240° or 270° (see table above).
There are also two variants of the 7 and 8-pin connectors, one where the outer pins are spread over the entire circle, and the other on a 270° arc4 And there are still other connectors with standards suitable for a wide range of applications.

Composition

A plug is made up of a circular metal frame that surrounds straight pins. The keying prevents misorientation and prevents damage to the pins. The armature is necessarily connected between the socket and the plug before any of the pins are connected.
However, the keying is the same for all connectors, so it is possible to force the connection between incompatible connectors, which caused damage. The Hosiden format corrects this defect.

There may be compatibility between different connectors, for example a three-pin connector can be plugged into a 180° type 5-pin socket, which connects three of the pins and the latter and leaves two of them in the air.
Conversely, a 5-prong plug can be plugged into some, but not all, three-prong outlets. Similarly, a 180° 5-pin socket can be plugged into a 7-prong or 8-prong socket.

Lockable versions of these connectors exist, two technologies for this purpose coexist : screw lock and quarter-turn lock.
This lock uses a ring surrounding the end of the male connector, which adapts to a boss on the female connector.

Advantages of DIN Connectors

  • Standardization : DIN connectors are standardized, which means that they follow precise specifications and dimensions set by DIN standards. This ensures compatibility and interchangeability between the different equipment using these connectors.

  • Reliability : DIN connectors are renowned for their reliability and durability. Their robust contacts and stable mechanical design ensure a secure and stable connection even in harsh environmental conditions.

  • Safety : DIN connectors are often designed with built-in locking mechanisms to prevent accidental disconnections. This ensures a secure connection of electrical equipment and reduces the risk of short circuits or damage.

  • Versatility : DIN connectors are used in a wide variety of applications, including audio, video, computing, lighting, industrial automation, home appliances, and more. Their versatility makes them suitable for many types of equipment.

  • Ease of use : DIN connectors are often designed to be easy to install and use. Their ergonomic design and simple locking mechanisms allow for quick and intuitive attachment connection.

Compatibility and Standardization

An essential aspect of DIN connectors is their standardization. This means that products from different manufacturers can usually be used together without compatibility issues.
This universality is particularly advantageous in professional environments, where different types of equipment often need to be connected together.
However, it is always recommended to check the specifications of each device to ensure that the connectors are compatible.

Installation and Maintenance

Installing DIN connectors is usually straightforward, but it requires some technical expertise, especially when it comes to wiring or mounting panels.
They are also relatively easy to maintain. Most problems with DIN connectors are due to physical wear or loose connections, which can be easily resolved by re-tightening or replacement.

Evolution

DIN connectors are evolving to meet the changing needs of emerging industries and technologies. Here are some of the current developments in DIN connectors :

  • DIN connectors for high-speed communication networks : With the increasing demand for bandwidth in communication networks, DIN connectors are evolving to support higher data rates. For example, specific variants of DIN connectors are being developed for high-speed Ethernet networks, optical networks and high-speed data transmission applications.

  • DIN Connectors for Power and Energy Applications : DIN connectors are also used in applications that require high power capacities, such as industrial electrical systems, control equipment, and power distribution infrastructure. Recent developments are aimed at improving the current capacity, mechanical robustness and safety of the DIN connectors used in these applications.

  • DIN connectors for medical and military applications : In the medical and military industries, DIN connectors are evolving to meet specific requirements such as electromagnetic interference (EMI) resistance, sterilization, compliance with medical and military standards, as well as compatibility with existing equipment.

  • DIN Connectors for Automotive Equipment : In the automotive industry, DIN connectors are evolving to meet the demands for reliability, durability, and performance in harsh environments. DIN connectors are used in a variety of automotive applications, including engine management systems, in-car entertainment systems, safety systems, and communication systems.

  • DIN connectors for miniaturized and integrated applications : With the trend towards miniaturization of electronic devices, DIN connectors are also evolving towards smaller and more compact versions, while maintaining their reliability and performance. These connectors are used in applications such as wearable devices, miniaturized medical devices, smart sensors, and embedded electronic equipment.
